Why Most Dashboards Are Useless

Let's be honest: most small business dashboards are vanity projects. They track 30 metrics, look impressive on a screen, and change absolutely nothing about how the business operates.

An effective dashboard does ONE thing: it tells you what decision to make next. If a metric doesn't lead to an action, it doesn't belong on your dashboard.

The best dashboards have 5-7 metrics. That's it. Each metric has a target, a current value, and a trend. Red/yellow/green. Done.

The 7 Universal KPIs Every Business Should Track

Revenue Growth Rate (Month-over-Month): Are you growing? At what pace? Target: 5-15% MoM for early-stage, 2-5% for established.
Gross Margin %: How much do you keep after direct costs? Below 50%? You have a pricing or cost problem.
Cash Runway (Weeks): How many weeks until you run out of cash at current burn rate? Below 8 weeks = emergency.
Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): How much does it cost to get a new customer? Must be less than 1/3 of LTV.
Revenue Per Employee: Total revenue ÷ headcount. Below $100K/employee? You're overstaffed or underpriced.
Accounts Receivable Days (DSO): How fast do customers pay? Above 45 days? Fix your collections.
Net Profit Margin %: Bottom line after all expenses. Below 10%? You need to optimize operations or pricing.
